In the Vestibular Dynamics Lab, we are exploring an exciting new way to help people with hearing and balance issues. From conditions like tinnitus and dizziness to head injuries and Meniere’s disease, our work focuses on special cells in the inner ear called supporting cells (SCs).
Supporting cells are crucial for keeping the inner ear organs working smoothly. Supporting cells are more than structural scaffolds, they directly influence the hair cells that sense sound and motion. Supporting cells regulate physiology in the inner ear organs with spontaneous calcium transients and by responding to neurotransmitterslike acetylcholine (ACh), muscarine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
Using advanced imaging tools, we’re learning more about how these cells could be targeted with new therapies. Our ultimate goal is to create solutions for people living with hearing or balance challenges.
